Business owners and managers are increasingly responsible for determining and managing the risk of fire not just to the business premises and continuity, but also to personnel employed. Owners and managers must demonstrate that they have taken all reasonable precautions to mitigated risk and/or ensure the safety or personnel within the workplace. A range of protective measures may need to be deployed to mitigate the risks posed by the impact of fire. The majority of commercial premises have fire alarms, but not all have them serviced. This is one area of business practice where there should be no compromise.
The British Standards that regulate standards and codes of practice for fire detection are - Fire Alarms in Buildings B.S.5839-1:2013 and Fire Alarms in Multi Occupation Dwellings B.S.5839-6:2004

BS 5839: Pt.6 among other things is relevant to dwellings including those with multiple occupation. For a landlord, compliance with the latest standards is obviously the best line of defence in any claim made against them.
BS 5839: Pt.6 is primarily concerned with saving lives and reducing injuries. However, it does contain within it recommendations for helping to reduce property damage too. Good fire safety practice and adherence to the Code can give the best possible early warning of fire and so reduce the financial impact as well as human suffering.
